What is this blog about?

Applications of advanced analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence to metallurgy and mineral processing. (Plus some extras here and there.)

Why?

Honestly, I started this blog just because. Machine learning is a booming field and super interesting to me. Metallurgy and mineral processing are my bread and butter and I see how advanced analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence could make huge improvements to production and processing efficiency when used appropriately. The mining industry is collecting massive amounts of data but unlocking it and turning it into something useful is a daunting task and, frankly, I love challenges.

So, who am I?

  1. I’m a metallurgist/mineral processing engineer by trade. I specialized in differential flotation, comminution, and advanced/expert controllers.
  2. I will date myself a bit and say I started programming in 2002 with C++ and Java. Very much off and on again, and I’m still shit at it. I suffered the misfortune that is Jeroo and am currently learning Python.
  3. If it wasn’t clear already, I’m a data/problem solving/optimization nerd.
  4. I believe in function over form. Necessity is truly the mother of invention. I’m quite good at hacky workarounds, but I’m trying to do better.
  5. Definitely could consider myself an audiophile (but I like garbage music) and serial hobbyist.
  6. I like podcasts when I’m working, particularly WorkLife by Adam Grant and Dungeons & Daddies (*not a BDSM podcast).
  7. Wannabe connoisseur of bourbon. My current favorite? Orphan Barrel’s Barterhouse.
  8. I would consider myself eccentric but I may just be crazy.

Let's do the Nenana Ice Classic!

The Nenana Ice Classic is an annual ice pool contest where individuals attempt to guess the exact time the Tanana River ice will break up at Nenana, AK. I’m not normally a betting person, but I’m willing to play this game.
